First BIG School Project

Hannah came home on Monday afternoon from school with her very first BIG school assignment. And when I say 'big", it means she's been given two weeks to complete the project.

In class, they've been learning the differences between suburban, urban, and rural areas. Their project is to create a diorama based around the area they've been assigned. In Hannah's case, she has to develop an urban diorama. The project is due September 9th.

We started working on it this afternoon, thanks to Gramma giving up one of her shoeboxes. Hannah wanted to make sure the outside looked nice so we covered the outside with black construction paper and then started on the backgrounds of the 'city'. The goal is to work a little bit on it each day. She's very excited about this project! What she doesn't realize is this is the first of many, many big projects to come in her school career!

Any tips for me? My son is also doing his first "project" for school, and he has chosen to do a city diorama, since we used to live in a city. What did you use to make the buildings, etc? I am not sure how much he should make from scratch. His teacher did say we can use cars and stuff like that from games. How did Hannah's project turn out? Thanks! cg

There is a picture of her finished project on September 8th. It won't let me put links here in the comment section.

But the cars and people we got from searching google images and then resizing them to fit proportionately with the rest of the stuff. The buildings are just construction paper cut out with windows and doors drawn on them. Clouds are cotton balls. LOL. The trees are broken popsicle sticks, colored brown, with spanish moss (bought at craft store) glued to it. LOL.

Good Luck with yours! Just remember it's HIS project and if the buildings aren't straight, oh well, it's his project. I had a hard time with wanting everything PERFECT! LOL.
