Today was the big day, the beginning of a new school year for Hannah. Here she is before leaving for school We got to school and found her classroom, and then found her desk. She was excited to have a red pencil box and to see the new crayons, scissors, her own glue stick, etc. After hanging out with her a few minutes, I gave her a kiss and said goodbye. I go to pick her up at 2:30pm. Her school day is 3 hours longer than what it was in Kindergarten.

Ahhh, the new crayon pack, one of my fondest memories of 1st grade (of elementary school, for that matter)!
California's the only state I know of that "gives" all those supplies to the kids. In most states you have to bring your own.
I know. You should see the list of supplies that my friend in Alabama and Maryland have to buy for thier kids. Wow!
It is the same here and in Tennessee too...long list of supplies. However, at least in Tennessee, the taxes were MUCH less than California!
Oregon has one of the highest income taxes (our school budget is like eighth highest per student), so it's shameful that students still have to buy supplies. Of course we have no sales tax though.
